The TUS Dr. Harty Cup: Quarter-Final Spots on the Line in Final Group Matches

The TUS Dr. Harty Cup has seen a dramatic shift in dynamics, with a reduced number of schools participating in the 2024-25 edition of the Munster PPS U19AFC. The field has shrunk from 21 to 16, eliminating the need for preliminary quarter-finals. Instead, four groups of four will be reduced to eight survivors for the knockout stage by the end of today's matches, leaving some recent finalists disappointed.

The holders, Thurles CBS, and Waterford's De La Salle, have already secured their spots in the quarter-finals. However, four teams are on the brink of elimination, while 10 schools remain in the running for the remaining six spots.

In Group 1, the 2023 champions, Cashel CS, were eliminated after just two games. The remaining three teams, Nenagh CBS, Ardscoil Rís, and St Flannan's College, are vying for the last two spots. Nenagh and St Flannan's each have three points, and a victory for Nenagh against Cashel at UL will secure their place. The match between St Flannan's and Ardscoil Rís in Clarecastle is a high-stakes affair, with the latter holding the advantage in case of a draw.

De La Salle, from Group 2, has already qualified but is not yet assured of the top spot. A loss to Midleton CBS at Fethard Town Park would see the Cork side finish first. However, if De La Salle wins, Midleton will be eagerly monitoring the progress of St Colman's College against the already-eliminated CBS High School Clonmel in Bansha.

St Colman's College trails Midleton by two points after a defeat to De La Salle, but a draw in the opening-round Cork derby means that scoring difference could be the deciding factor in case of a tie.

In Group 3, Thurles CBS's match against Doon's Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa at UL is a formality, as the holders will finish top regardless of the outcome. The real excitement lies in the other game between Blackwater CS and John The Baptist CS of Hospital in Castlelyons. Both schools are tied on two points, and this match is effectively a quarter-final qualifier. Hospital has the scoring-difference advantage in case of a draw.

Group 4 saw Gaelcholáiste Mhuire An Mhainistir Thuaidh face Christian Brothers College two weeks ago, with the former's victory eliminating the latter and ending their hopes of advancing. However, Gaelcholáiste Mhuire's progress is not yet guaranteed. They will face Our Lady's Secondary School of Templemore at Fethard Town Park at 1:45 pm, in a knockout tie where Gaelcholáiste Mhuire holds a one-point advantage.

While a defeat for Gaelcholáiste Mhuire might not eliminate them, it would require CBC to beat St Joseph's Secondary School of Tulla, who are targeting the top spot. The day's matches will determine the final quarter-finalists, with the tension and excitement building as the tournament nears its climax.
