Prepare for a wild ride! "Stone Cold Fox" promises a gritty, 80s-inspired action thriller that might just leave you breathless. But can it deliver on that nostalgic vibe? Let's dive in!
Just a few weeks ago, word broke about Sophie Tabet's directorial debut, and it sounded amazing. "Stone Cold Fox" is a revenge-fueled action thriller drenched in 1980s aesthetics. The movie boasts a stellar cast including Kiernan Shipka (best known from "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"), Kiefer Sutherland (the iconic Jack Bauer from "24"), Krysten Ritter (the unforgettable "Jessica Jones"), Mishel Prada ("Brilliant Minds"), and Karen Fukuhara ("The Boys").
Vertical Entertainment snagged the U.S. distribution rights, and now we have a release date: November 7th! Even better, a trailer has just dropped. You can find the trailer online to get a sneak peek of the action.
The screenplay is a collaborative effort between Tabet and Julia Roth, based on a story they developed with Jonathan Craven (yes, the son of horror legend Wes Craven!). The plot of "Stone Cold Fox" centers on Fox (Shipka), who escapes a brutal commune in search of her family. But here's where it gets controversial... When a ruthless queenpin (Ritter) kidnaps Fox's younger sister, and a corrupt cop (Sutherland) is hot on her trail, Fox is forced to infiltrate the very place she fought so hard to escape. Is this a clever twist on the classic revenge trope, or just another rehash of familiar themes?
Tabet, Roth, and Craven also served as producers, alongside Stephen Braun of Bee-Hive and Chris Abernathy and Eric B. Fleischman of The Wonder Company. Joe Roth, Andrea Bucko, Emily Hunter Salveson, and Ross Putman are credited as executive producers.
Tabet expressed her excitement to Deadline, stating, "I grew up on gritty ’80s action thrillers, so getting to make my own audacious thrill-ride with a fearless partner like Vertical handling the release is a dream come true. I’m endlessly grateful to the incredible cast and crew who brought this labor of love to life.” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey echoed this sentiment, adding, “Sophie has delivered a thriller that keeps you on edge and showcases her talent as an emerging filmmaker. We’re excited to bring it to audiences and look forward to them experiencing it for themselves.“
As someone who also grew up on those same gritty '80s action flicks (those were practically the only movies my dad would watch!), I'm genuinely eager to see how Tabet's tribute turns out. And this is the part most people miss: The combination of a cool cast and the exploitation movie throwback vibe shown in the trailer really piques my interest. Will it capture the raw energy of those classics, or will it fall short of the mark?
